2023 Firefighter BOOT DRIVE

GET READY for the annual Firefighter Boot Drive coming on March 9, 2023!

Each year, hundreds of uniformed firefighters from fire departments all over San Diego County come together for a common goal, hopping aboard their engines to meet at intersections within their communities. At those traffic lights, they collect donations in their boots during the morning and evening commutes. Each year, passing motorists help to fill those boots with their spare change – $1, $5, $20 – even $100 bills. No matter the economy or weather, San Diegans have always given generously.

Proceeds benefit the Burn Institute fire and burn prevention education programs, and burn survivor support programs, such as Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children 8–17 years old. The Burn Institute’s unique camp program has provided a safe place for many hundreds of young burn survivors to share their experiences in a supportive camp environment.

SDFFCU presented a $1,000 check on Feb 4 to the Chula Vista Firefighters Foundation to assist with the four injured Chula Vista firefighters during a recent fire. Our own Monica Lewis presented the check yesterday to the Treasurer Matt Carleton, an Engineer for Chula Vista Fire Dept. Their goal is $50,000 for these firefighters.

If you would like to donate to this cause, (Click HERE) to access a Go Fund Me page.

Statement from Chula Vista Fire Department re: Action Footwear Fire on January 25, 2021, at 5:40 p.m

Four CVFD firefighters were injured fighting the Action Footwear Fire on January 25, 2021. Three firefighters were treated and released from the hospital on January 26. They are recovering from their injuries and are expected to return to work in approximately two to four weeks.

A fourth firefighter remains hospitalized and is expected to be in the hospital for one to three more weeks. As reported, he suffered second and third degree burns over 20 percent of his body and has a lengthy recovery ahead. He is not expected to return to work for four to six months. The City of Chula Vista and the Chula Vista Fire Department are providing support to him and his family during this time.

The Chula Vista Firefighters Union and the non-profit Chula Vista Firefighters Foundation have started a Go Fund Me page, for the injured firefighters. The fourth firefighter lives in a neighboring County and the distance in addition to the hospitalization, have added to the family’s burden.

85TH FIRE RESCUE ACADEMY - DRILL & FAMILY NIGHT - JUNE 8, 2018

SDFFCU Hosts dinner for 85th Fire Academy Drill Night.

As is tradition with each class, nighttime drills are held which allow relatives and friends of the future firefighters a chance to observe, up close, exactly what being a firefighter is all about. Observing the demonstrations drove home not only how significant an accomplishment completing the training is, but also explained the tired, dirty, incredibly motivated future firefighters who made their way home each evening after 10-hour training days, only to rise up the next day to face whatever challenges instructors had planned for them.

Prior to the demonstrations, recruits and their guests ate dinner together, and then, as the alarms sounded, each group of recruits put on full PPE and marched in unison to their respective assignments. With veteran SDFRD firefighters observing, and under the watchful eyes of not only their guests but department brass, the firefighter recruits demonstrated their skills at fighting structure fires, car fires, ventilating roofs, conducting ladder operations, preforming search and rescue, repelling from third-story windows, and executing vehicle extrication.
